Clean Your Computer

Saturday, June 3rd, 2006

I was talking with actor Mike Lutz today. He was having problems logging into the blog area of Cowboy Smoke. We went back and forth through email and couldn’t find the problem. He just couldn’t log in. However, I could log in under his account fine. We finally spoke by phone and I walked him through the process, only to find out we still couldn’t get him logged in. I then thought that perhaps the problem had to do with a browser cookie. I figured if we cleaned his “cache” it would help. I talked him through the process on the phone and once the old cookies were deleted, he was able to log in fine!

Since some of you may have no idea what I am talking about, read on…

Browser cookies, images, and webpage files are stored on people’s computers by websites they visit in their “temporary internet files” or “cache.” If someone surfs the internet a lot and visits many websites they may notice their computer getting “slower.” This is due to the “temporary internet files” getting too full and taking up valuable space on the hard drive. Sometimes browser cookie files can be corrupted or not updated correctly, which will cause problems logging into membership sites. Periodically, everyone needs to clean out these files to improve their internet browsing.

Here are the steps for you to clear your “temporary internet files” …

* In the Internet Explorer Browser

Step 1 - See the top of the browser window where it says FILE | EDIT | VIEW | FAVORITES | TOOLS | HELP ? Click on TOOLS

Step 2 - On the drop down menu in the TOOLS area, click on INTERNET OPTIONS

Step 3 - Delete Cookies Button. NOTE: When you delete the cookies, you will have to type in your membership username and password again for any membership sites that you have joined. This button deletes all cookies that remembered that information for you.

Step 4 - Delete Files Button. NOTE: When you empty these files, you delete images and files from websites you have visited in the past. Those files will be reloaded on your computer when you visit the website again. This isn’t a bad thing unless you get too many of these types of files. Having the files on your computer helps reduce your load time for frequently visited sites.

Step 5 - Settings Button and then the “View Files” Button. NOTE: If you only want to delete CERTAIN files from your “temporary internet files” folder, you can click this button to find them and delete them individually.

In this settings area, you can also set the amount of disk space you want these types of files to use by moving the bar and changing the disk space megabytes.

There may be different ways to clean your “cache” through other internet browsers which you can search Google to find the directions for. There is another way to get access to your “temporary internet files” through your C drive folders as well, but I don’t want to go into that right now and possibly confuse anyone.

Thank you for the information. I will have to do this on my computer. I had no idea about this as I have learned by myself on what I know on the computer or what others have sent me. And I will be sure to let others know. Thanks ever so much.

Wendy, this little trick has often kept my PC humming nicely.
Cleaning the temp files also helps as I have been told by my cable company, when calling them regarding slow connection, that, often times, its one cookie not coping well with the other. So on their suggestion, as they knew service in the area was running fine, I cleaned my temp files and they were right, my slow connection went back to being super fast.

Another usefull cleaning up would be to hit the start button, put curser over find, click files or folders.
type:”*.TMP” in the named field (without the quotation marks) then type on the location line: C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
Delete all except for the current date.

Spyware , Adware , Scumware

Sunday, May 7th, 2006

This is an IMPORTANT COMPUTER TIP …

I have an important message to share with you. I felt strongly about it before, but now that it has happened to me, I feel even more strongly about it.

First, let me ask you the following questions:

1) When you go to http://www.google.com, do you see a popup ad while still in the search results at any time? You shouldn’t, because Google doesn’t support pops at all.

2) Do you get popups on a website with a competing company advertisement? If so, Why would that company advertise their competitors? Think about it.

3) Do you have a web search toolbar in your browser that you didn’t insall?

4) Do you have a web search toolbar in the top of your emails that you didn’t install?

5) Do you see icons on your taskbar or desktop that shows software you didn’t install?

I did. I also knew what was causing it due to working on the internet as much as I do. If you have ever heard of Spyware, Adware, or Scumware, you will know what I am talking about. These programs can record your every move – secretly gathering information about you including which websites you visit, which ads you click on, your name, age, social security number, credit card number, passwords, email addresses, buying habits and more.

These bad program are not picked up by anti-virus programs at all. So, since I found that I had it, and I was getting quite annoyed by the extra popups, and couldn’t guess what other information of mine was being stolen. So, I had to ask a friend of mine what the programs there were to help get rid of it.

I downloaded spyware software, try AdAware, and did a scan. This scan resulted in a few small things to have removed. But, it didn’t find the cause of my problem. I was still getting popups at websites I knew didn’t carry the popups. Turns out that I had 2 new spyware bugs. I decided to research the search engine to see what spyware programs others trusted.

If you really want to protect yourself, I highly recommend doing something about keeping your computer free of spyware/adware. The price is affordable, especially for this type of protection.

I even asked how I had picked this Spyware up. I was told ” It’s a Driveby. Which basically means you went to a site or a pop-up was displayed, an ActiveX component was installed; which in turned installed the Spyware. This is the 2nd most common way of getting it. The other way is by installing free games, etc. You may want to adjust your IE Security settings to a higher level. You will get message boxes when you go to sites but it should help prevent these from installing.”

I hope you found this information useful. If you feel that you have found it useful, please send this message to family and friends to help protect them. I am amazed at what comes out sometimes that tries to sabatoge our computers on the internet. Always read and be aware of what is out there. Search google for the latest computer threats. Educate yourself.

Advertisers and Publishers Beware

Monday, February 27th, 2006

Advertisers and publishers of websites need to beware of the companies they work with. When an offer comes your way to join an advertising company, make sure to research the company thoroughly. A fast, easy way to get feedback about the company or people involved is to search Google for their company name. I have been approached many, many times by companies that offer lead generation, or co-registration, etc. They want to have access to my visitors by having me sign up and put offers on my websites. I try to be very careful about what I place up. So, I research, and sometimes the results are not so pretty. Some of these companies are behind the spam that arrives in our email boxes.

Things to consider: Does the company or do their advertisers…

1) have a privacy policy that allows a visitors data to be sold? or used for spam?
2) fulfill their promotions to your visitors?
3) have only one registration page? or does the process go through a gamut of several pages for several offers?
4) make themselves easily accessible?
5) have testimonials? (make sure to check for any possible negative reviews through Google or another search engine)

Advertisers and publishers need to make sure that their name does not get ruined by bad practices of these companies. There are plenty of good companies that can help advertisers connect with consumers through a publisher’s website. Just research before you sign up with them. :)

Web Hosting

Sunday, February 12th, 2006

I have not been posting, emailing or keeping in touch as I usually do. This is due to a big change I had to go through with my web hosting. I have about 20 of my own websites, and about 20 or so client websites. Most of these websites have been happily housed on a reliable web host, which I liked, and had good customer service for several years.

Sounds rosy, doesn’t it? Well, good things obviously aren’t meant to last in every case. You should read this so that you can see the signs, problems and find a solution as I did…

I started having trouble with getting in touch with the hosting provider in late November, early December. I had to cancel a credit card since it was found to have fraudulent orders on it. So, I tried to update my billing information at this host. I also had to get a client’s credit card billing information updated for the same reason. I didn’t want our hosting accounts to expire and shut down our websites. There is no way for a customer to update this billing info themselves, so contacting the host directly is the only way.

January came around, and still no response, until… I received a message from the host that the emails I had sent were never received. I was told to send them again, which I did. I know of two websites that this host runs, and also sent the messages through those online forms. Extra measures were taken to also submit trouble tickets and try to call via phone. All bases covered, right? Something had to go through. No more responses again. *sigh

The emails I sent weren’t addressing just the billing information needing to be updated. I was trying to get some hosting accounts upgraded, bandwidth upgraded, etc. These are important issues, and customer service is the BIGGEST concern of all.

I am a patient person. I know I was trying to get these things resolved around the holidays. I figured this host perhaps went on vacation. I thought perhaps they got behind with the New Year tasks. Every scenario went through my mind. I am sure this host wanted my money. Or did it?…

By mid January, all of those scenarios went out of the window! There is no reason good enough to make a customer wait three months to get service.

I had started doing REAL research on hosting companies. In the beginning of January, I spent weeks reading message boards, rating sites, review sites, blogs, etc. Good reviews and bad reviews revealed why people loved or hated the host. I seriously looked to see who was behind each company. If I couldn’t find contact information, what their address was, where their hosting services were run through, etc. I wouldn’t even think about using their services. I wanted to make sure there were many avenues to try and contact the host.

Thank goodness I found Host Gator Host Gator, who I thought would be good to host a few websites on. It had all of the right things I was looking for in a web host. I thought of hosting a few websites over there and spread my other websites over several web hosts. I was trying to stick with the idea of not having all of your eggs in one basket. However, I did dread the idea of having to move all of my websites over to any host manually, file by file. No matter, it had to be done.

Mid January, I started to set up a couple of accounts through Host Gator. Things were going nicely. I decided to move one of my client’s websites as well. Since he is not savvy with websites, I placed my own email address and phone number in the sign up form. The phone rang… “This is Host Gator. I am calling to verify this account…” They were calling to make sure the account wasn’t fraudulent since the name, credit card, phone number and email didn’t seem right. I was shocked, glad, and excited all at the same time. What company does that?!? It is a rare quality!

All was worked out and kosher. While talking to Host Gator, I asked some questions, told my scenario a wee bit, and got information that saved myself from a ton of unnecessary work moving all of those websites. Some of you reading this may already know this, but in case you don’t know… If the old host has a cpanel, it can easily be backed up along with the databases, script settings, email accounts, etc. all in tact. Backed up, zipped up, and uploaded to the new host’s cpanel as if nothing ever happened. The only thing that you have to do is ask Host Gator to move it for you, which they will do for free, and then change your DNS. I use ItsYourDomain for my domain names, so I just go in there and change the DNS myself. It can take up to 24-48 hours for this to go through, many times in a few hours.

As I am working this all out with Host Gator, I haven’t said ANYTHING to my old host about moving my websites. I suddenly find that my site, Dreamish.com, had it’s account closed. WHAT?!? Well… that had to do with not being able to update my billing info, now didn’t it! I lost my membership system that I paid to have installed on Dreamish.com and it isn’t retrievable. Ok… so now I am in a panic. I HAVE to move these websites off of the old host. I HAVE to let my clients know what is going on and have them moved from the old host.

An amazing little problem sort of bubbled up from talking with my clients. As I explained the details to my clients, I found that I wasn’t the only one who had to update my billing information. Quite a few of them had to as well. A few others said that they have never even been billed for their hosting accounts. Now I just find this outright strange. You see it coming, don’t you?… Many of us had to change our credit cards because of fraudulent charges on them. The only thing that we ALL had in common WAS this web host. Hmmmm… Now I am not pointing the blame directly at this host, as it could be the payment processor that is bad, or got hacked. It could have been the host’s billing area that got hacked, or the whole web host is hacked and that is why they haven’t gotten my messages. It could be people working for the host that were doing wrong. Again, every scenario went through my mind. No matter, they aren’t accepting anymore orders.

Due to the circumstance, I decided to move ALL of the websites to Host Gator right away. I didn’t like the other choices I had researched for other web hosts as much. I didn’t have time to research anymore. Plus, I felt that I was totally happy with Host Gator ’s customer support via online chat, phone, and email. I know where the company is located. I know where they host their servers from. I talk to people who comprehend what I am saying and who I find easy to understand when getting support. The billing area is easily accessible, where all of my hosting accounts are in one location. Another good thing, I can update my billing information easily.

After all of these years of working on the internet, it is rare to find good companies to work with. I have gathered a few that I use regularly due to their customer support, high values, ease of use, and affordability in comparison to their competitors. If by sharing these resources, I can help someone, I am happy to have saved someone the time and headache of researching for themselves. Cheaper isn’t always better! I have been there, used some of their competitors before I found them in many cases, and really love the following companies…

- Host Gator – my newfound favorite. Never have I found a web host like this as you read above. I have had a lot of more interaction with them via support than I listed above, and have not been disappointed at all.

- Its Your Domain – sticking with not putting all of your eggs in one basket… I never purchase my domain name from my hosting company. Can you imagine what would have happened if I couldn’t get through to that old host if they were hosting my domain names? I would be held in limbo. I probably would have lost my websites. It has happened people. So, go directly to the registrars. I have used ItsYourDomain for many happy years now.

- aWeber – my favorite newsletter hosting company. You should not host your own newsletter on your own website. I used to do so. It was messy, time-consuming, and a server load. aWeber makes sure they keep up with the latest that filters are requiring of them to make sure your newsletters get through. Undeliverables automatically get unsubscribed so that you don’t pay for subscribers that bounce. They have a flat fee for 10,000 subscriber increments. aWeber also provides auto responders for your use. Plus more that I suggest you check out for yourself.

- Template Monster – there are times that a web designer will benefit from letting a client select a template that they can already see and have tweaked to their needs. It can be very cost effective if money is an issue for a client or for your self. Template Monster has very professional templates to offer. Sometimes just taking a template and changing the images in it will make the website look unique enough.

- My Affiliate Program – I have been an Affiliate for many years. I was also an Affiliate Manager for a company who ran their website through a third party company. It was not an easy backend to use. I go to work for another company who used MyAffiliateProgram and was amazed at how user friendly the backend is. The tracking is really nice, uploading banners and such are easy enough to learn. This one is usually used by bigger merchants. Smaller merchants are offered a lower end version named Affiliate Clicks. I have used both and have been pleased.

- Revenue Magazine - This is the magazine that did an interview on me two years ago and a follow up interview for this year. The people who work here are genuinely friendly. I have had a subscription from the beginning. It is really useful to help keep up on the latest trends, issues, news, companies and so forth in the internet.

I will post these and any other companies that I love in the right hand column of WendyShepherd.com under the title of “My Favorite Services” for you to find anytime you need them. I placed them there for easy access. Only the best will be listed there after they are well checked out and I have used their services.

Is it REALLY free?

Wednesday, October 12th, 2005

I really want to vent, but I realize that I have to understand that some people either get confused, or simply don’t “GET IT” when it comes to getting something for free. Is it REALLY free? Think about it. SOMEONE is paying for it to become available to you for “FREE” somehow!

Let’s look at newspapers or magazines that you receive for “FREE.” These publications are supported by advertising that is built around the content. The more advertising dollars the publications gain, the more they can grow. Some publications will charge you AND place advertising around their content. So, you should feel lucky that SOMEONE is paying for you to get the “FREE” version, which isn’t really free because they are “BUYING” space for your eyeballs to see their products or services. Same with television.

Now, why would I vent about this? Perhaps it is because I offer free printables on a website that is built upon the same premise. Chart Jungle has printable charts, schedules, checklists, etc. available for free. Let me tell you, it isn’t free for me to run the site and it isn’t free for me to send out a newsletter to let my subscribers know that there are more free printables, articles, etc. available. Every time that someone loads each printable image, my bandwidth gets used and the price for it is paid for by me. I use a third party host to send out my newsletter and they charge me too.

To offset the costs that I have to pay each month, I build advertising around the content areas, just like I mentioned the newspapers and magazines do. I get TONS of nice letters from thankful individuals and families each month. However, I get a few of the selfish and mean messages too, which I don’t understand. For heaven’s sake, these printables are free!

I received messages like:

” I don’t want the advertising, I just want the free printables ”

” I feel like I was duped into signing up for what I thought were charts and helpful tips and stuff. What I got from your site is advertisements ”

” Remove me from your “Club”. I joined by lure of “free printables”. However, it’s a scam like everything else. You should be ashamed of yourselves luring in desperate parents. ”

Hmmm… wow. A scam, they were duped, they don’t want advertising. Those types of messages make me think about charging subscribers a monthly cost and remove the advertising. However, that wouldn’t be fair to the parents who can’t afford it and really rely on the charts that I provide. I use these charts myself, and found that sharing them helped others.

So, maybe they just misunderstand, or got confused. I am not sure. But, one thing is for sure… NOTHING is REALLY free. SOMEONE is paying for it and for a reason.

I am sure that my fellow friends in the media online and offline understand this view.

Tens of thousands of page views per day and the fact that you get emails like this infrequently sends a clear message to me that 99.9% of your following loves what your doing for them. There’s always going to be an occasional whiney baby so don’t take it to heart dear. I know you’re a perfectionist and you want to make everyone happy but you always are going to have at least one knuckle-head out of ten thousand! :-)

Wendy,
Sorry that you are frustrated and dealing with this right now. Hopefully, your readers will realize that advertising is better than being charged for your content. The free printables are a bonus and they should be thankful you offer that. You are not giving them worms or trojan horses just advertising. What’s the harm in that? If they don’t want to buy the product they don’t have to. It’s a choice. I hope you are able to continue providing interesting content and points of view to your readers. Some ethos for you: I work for The Palm Beach Post so I totally understand the situation.

Hi Wendy,

Some people are really thick arent they???? I love your sight and have been a subscriber for years and I for one love the different things that you offer on your sight I have never thought it was to much I love your sight for what if is and what it offers isnt that the purpose of going to a websight???
The printables are great and so helpful and your right alot of homeschool families dont have alot of money so your sight is a real blessing for them as well. If the others dont like the way your doing things they can make there own charts or just get the charts they want and make copies and dont bother coming back it they dont want to be bothered!!! Another idea I know your real busy but maybe you could make a CD of your main helpful charts and sell them for a set price and the complainers can get their charts that way and you could make some extra money as well…I am also a stay at home homeschooling Mom and maybe I could be of some assistance?? I love your sight and would hate to loose it because some people dont understand the concept of free stuff..Know what I mean?? You and Mike have some awesome sights keep up the good work and dont let a few bad apples ruin the whole basket for the ones who really appreciate all you do and all your hard work. Your the best and so is your sights…. :>) Have a good one Stephanie

Hi Wendy!
Have loved your site for a long time now and could really relate to your frustration. As an online entreprenuer, I have come to believe that there is a weird little group of aliens that get paid big bucks to harass all the rest of us and make us feel as low as possible~ maybe so we quit and they can take over the whole cyber space universe for themselves! Anyway~ I say “Keep up the good work” and don’t let the little depressed cyber-whiners get to ya~

Starting a website

Saturday, August 27th, 2005

I get asked certain questions about starting a website often. I thought I would go ahead and give some directions on here to help others who might need to know…

Steps to getting your DOMAIN NAME and HOSTING set up…

Step 1) Domain name : the name of your website (cost: yearly: usually $14.95). I usually purchase my domains through Its Your Domain . I have used them for years and have had no problems. Their back end is user friendly. Changing DNS (domain name servers), updating billing information, etc. are real easy. I recommend that you have your domain name AUTO RENEW so you don’t forget to renew them, or you will lose them.

Step 2) Hosting : the place where you store your files for your website (cost: monthly: usually $7, $10, or $15 or more depending on things you need). I never purchase my domain names and hosting from the same place. I never put all of my eggs in one basket in case something happens to one of them. For hosting, I use Host Gator and I have been EXTREMELY happy using their service. Host Gator also has lots of goodies for your website to utilize. Once you have purchased your domain name and your hosting, you need to point the DOMAIN NAME to the HOST by changing the DNS (domain name servers). I will tell you how in Step 3 and Step 4.

Step 3) You will have received an email notice that your domain name is purchased. You will also have received an email notice that your Host Gator account is active. Make sure you have also received your email notice from Host Gator that tells you the DNS (domain name servers) to use. The name servers for your domain to point to will look something like this: Nameserver: ns.hostgator.com. (there are two of these nameservers)

Step 4) You will now log into Its Your Domain and point your DOMAIN NAME to your Host Gator HOST where your files will reside. Here is how:
- Go to Its Your Domain
- Login and and go to the link that says “Change DNS/Hosting Info” (Modify Domain Name Server & IP addresses)
- Check the box beside your domain name that you need to change the DNS information on and click “Continue”
- On this next page, you will see a “DNS Information” table with four little boxes.
- Replace the first two domain name servers to the new ones from LiveRack.
- Click continue and you should be done.

After the steps above, you will either be hiring a website designer or creating the website yourself.

Keep in mind that it sometimes takes 24-48 hours to have the DNS updated across the internet.

Thanks Wendy! You are a wealth of information, Girl! I’ve thought about upgrading a couple of my websites; as you know, I use the freebies. I hate all the ads, but I must say, I learned a few things. So, I have a question, if I upgrade the website I had you look at last week, will I lose all the files in upgrading or will they stay intact??
Thank you for everything you do Wendy, it is appreciated. I especially love CHART JUNGLE.

Hi Tasha. I started out learning on the freebies also. I hated the ads and didn’t like that I wasn’t taken seriously as a website owner. The domains and hosting services were more expensive when I first started.

The files will have to be moved to your new host. If you are upgrading on the freebies host, you will have to read their instructions as to whether the files remain or not. Are you using their online editor or are you using hand coding, or an html editor?

Phone Number Lookup

Thursday, August 18th, 2005

I love caller ID, but there are times that I have no idea who is calling. The phone calls show up as “Out of Area,” “Private Caller,” or they show a name and phone number I’m not familiar with. When that happens, I do a number of things :

1) I go on my computer and use my Google Toolbar, or you can just go to Google.com and type in the phone number that shows up on the caller ID. (with the dashes)

2) I go to http://www.whitepages.com and use the “Reverse Phone Number Lookup”.

3) I ignore it and figure if they really needed something, they would leave me a message on my answering machine. If I am here, I may even answer the phone but only once I have determined who is on the other end.

This saves me from having to deal with telemarketers and other unsolicited phone calls.

Oh, and in case you aren’t aware of it, you can have caller id on your phone calls that come in even when you are on the phone. This way you can see who is trying to call when you are on the phone and decide to keep talking or take another important call.

Hi Wendy,
Thanks for all the Google tips good info to know…
I also pay $1.00 a month on my phone bill to use something
that is called a privacy director when you get one of the phone calls that are unknown or not listed this service automatically picks up and lets you decide if you want to talk to them. You answer the phone and a voice will say caller state your name and then you will get three choices of what to do with the call
1 answer the call 2 caller reject or 3 sales call reject all without answering the phone call but hearing who the call is.
I love it when you click the sales call reject they never call back either. Well all for now have a great day.

Hi Wendy,
Something else your phone company might offer, private call rejection. That means your phone doens’t even ring unless the caller unblocks their number, unless it’s a doctors office, those are the only ones that get through on my phone. I think we pay $2.00 a month for it, but it is a piece of mind. Just thought this might help. Have a great day!

Why Celebrities Need A Website

Thursday, July 14th, 2005

I mentioned before that PEOPLE is one of my favorite magazines. There is a reason for this. Over the years I have read other “people type” magazines that cover stories and haven’t found many that “tell the truth”. I recall that certain celebrities give PEOPLE exclusive stories and try to tell their stories to them since they trust them more than other magazines. So, I tend to buy the magazine for that reason. However, I also like the other stories about authors, artists, etc. in the magazine. I also like the fact that PEOPLE isn’t a cluttered mess. It has a nice clean layout.

I just happened to pick up a copy of another magazine recently. Both magazines covered the story of Angelina Jolie adopting a new baby. However, one magazine didn’t (more…)

Super Mom? Check the List…

Saturday, May 21st, 2005

A mother always has a full plate. Super mom is a category that I find myself in often. My tasks include being mom, housewife, homeschool teacher, and small home business owner. I am often asked about how I do it all. There is no complete balance really. There is no schedule that I go by. Housework suffers many times. I am thankful to have a wonderful husband who understands and helps around the house. My children are also helpful about the chore requirements when they want to be. I feel truly blessed.
